Carter VanAkin is an 18-year-old student from the Branch Area Career Center whose dedication to crop production and livestock has grown into a thriving agricultural experience. As a finalist for the Michigan FFA Star in Production Award, Carter has built a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) program that combines hands-on learning, leadership and a commitment to excellence.

During his time in FFA, Carter has been involved in growing row crops and raising pigs. One of the highlights of his experience was competing in the AgroLiquid Crop Management Contest, where his team was crowned state winners. “FFA has made a big difference in my life, not just from all the people I have met and opportunities I’ve had, but from shaping me into the person I am today. For example, public speaking—FFA pushed me outside my comfort zone and helped me grow,” Carter said.

Being able to plan, grow and harvest crops alongside his family and industry professionals has taught Carter the importance of preparation and attention to detail. He ensures that all equipment is inspected and adjusted for optimum performance before heading to the field. Working side by side with his brother and father has also emphasized the value of routine maintenance and caring for equipment to increase profitability.

Crop scouting is a critical part of Carter’s SAE, giving him the opportunity to partner with industry professionals and learn to identify disease and pest issues early. He has developed a keen understanding of plant health and management practices. One of the major lessons he has learned is that slowing down and paying attention, while still staying productive, is crucial for success. “Moving equipment from field to field is a common occurrence, and taking the time to ensure safety is very important,” he said.

Carter encourages other FFA members to step outside their comfort zones and try new experiences. “Don’t be afraid to try something new or something you’re not comfortable with. Being uncomfortable and doing things you’re afraid to do shapes you into the person you are,” he said. His perseverance and dedication have influenced his career goals, which include expanding his personal acres and becoming a full-time partner on his family farm.

The Michigan FFA Star in Production Award recognizes students who demonstrate excellence through hands-on agricultural production, and Carter exemplifies those qualities. He will be recognized as a finalist at the 98th Michigan FFA State Convention, held March 4–6, 2026, on the campus of Michigan State University alongside fellow finalists Barret Yoho from Owosso and Griffin Messing from Ubly.
