Colby Tucker is a prime example of commitment and passion among the ranks of FFA members, particularly as a finalist for the 2025 Michigan FFA Star in Production Award. At just 17 years old, Colby has made impressive strides in both livestock and agricultural entrepreneurship, showcasing not only his hard work but also his commitment to diversification.

A significant portion of Colby’s journey in FFA has revolved around his supervised agricultural experiences (SAEs), where his strengths and interests collide. For Colby, it all began with sheep. Alongside his sister, he founded Royal Court Show Stock, where they not only bred a successful flock but also showcased their hard work in the show ring. This venture ignited a love for livestock and laid the foundation for Colby’s future endeavors.

As he nurtured his passion, Colby expanded his horizons into beef production. Starting with just one show heifer, he now manages a 10-head herd that includes multiple breeds. It’s not just about raising cattle for Colby; he takes pride in every aspect of the process, from making purchasing decisions to selecting breeding pairs. With his latest endeavor, he’s even learned how to artificially inseminate his cattle, acquiring skills that will undoubtedly benefit both him and his herd in the long run.

But livestock isn’t the only area where Colby excels. He has also transformed what used to be just a seasonal break during calving and lambing into a thriving maple syrup business. Together with his father, Colby taps trees, gathers sap, boils it down and bottles the pure Michigan syrup that he sells both privately and in a local farm store. This multifaceted approach to agriculture not only diversifies his experience, but also highlights his entrepreneurial spirit.

Additionally, Colby’s involvement in livestock evaluation has further enhanced his expertise, allowing him to improve his herd and flock. His dedication has taken him beyond local competitions, giving him the chance to travel and compete on a national level. Through these experiences, Colby has built a network of breeders and gained access to genetic resources that will serve him well as he continues to grow in his agricultural career.

As a member of the Hopkins FFA Chapter, Colby’s influence extends beyond his own projects; he’s taken on numerous chapter offices and currently serves as Region I treasurer. This leadership role reflects his dedication to personal growth and the betterment of his community. After graduation, Colby plans to further his education by pursuing a degree in manufacturing engineering, specializing in aerospace.

Just weeks away from awarding the Michigan FFA Star in Production Award, it’s time to celebrate the exceptional achievements of the three finalists: William Rogers from the Saline FFA Chapter, Colby Tucker from the Hopkins FFA Chapter and Luke Volmering from the Ubly FFA Chapter. These outstanding individuals embody the spirit of hard work, dedication and excellence that defines FFA.

So, here’s to Colby Tucker, a great reminder of why supporting FFA and young farmers like him is so vital for our future! Please consider investing in the future of outstanding students like Colby by supporting the Michigan FFA Foundation.
