Two parts hardworking, one part innovative and three parts dedicated, Luke Volmering is a talented Ubly FFA member who has earned a spot as a finalist for the 2025 Michigan FFA Star in Production Award. This young entrepreneur is not only a finalist for the Michigan FFA Star in Production, but also a shining example of how dedication, hard work and a love for agriculture can pave the way for future success.
Growing up on a family farm, Luke’s story isn’t one of overnight success; it’s a tale of a young boy who declared in seventh grade that he would one day run his own farm with his brothers. Fast forward a few years, and he’s well on his way to making that dream a reality.
In seventh grade, while most kids were figuring out middle school life, Luke was already clocking in long hours on his family farm. His commitment was unwavering—he knew early on that agriculture was his calling. By the time he reached eleventh grade, Luke had taken the significant step of growing his own cash crops and purchasing 25 cows and a bull, laying the foundation for his cow/calf operation.
Today, Luke manages 82 acres of rented cropland, where he grows dry beans, corn and hay. With a keen eye for growth, he’s planning to start buying his own equipment soon, further solidifying his independence and commitment to his farming career. His initial foray into cattle farming has expanded, now boasting two bulls and 32 additional heifers, with a total of 31 calves born this spring and summer.
Luke’s ambitions don’t stop here. Within the next five years, he envisions managing 250 cattle and overseeing 350 acres of cropland. Partnering with his brothers, Luke will continue the family legacy, becoming a third-generation farmer. After high school, he plans to dive headfirst into farming full-time, dedicating himself to building his assets and growing his operation.
Luke Volmering is a testament to what young people in agriculture can achieve with determination, support and a vision for the future. His journey from a middle schooler with a dream to a finalist for Michigan FFA Star in Production is an inspiration to all.
