Lilly Nyland, Michigan FFA’s 2024 National Officer Candidate, has been a shining example of leadership and dedication throughout her journey in FFA. A Zeeland West High School graduate with high honors and a Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish, Lilly has used her linguistic skills and passion for agriculture to connect with diverse communities. As Michigan FFA’s State Secretary, she facilitated over 90 hours of educational programs, represented more than 8,850 members, and cultivated key relationships with legislators and agricultural leaders.
Lilly’s desire to serve as a National FFA Officer is inspired by her belief in FFA’s ability to guide members like a lighthouse, lighting their paths within the agricultural industry. “Lighthouses serve to light the way, for anyone and everyone, and each lighthouse is unique in its own way,” she shares, reflecting on the lighthouse analogy that has shaped her leadership approach.
Through her candidacy, Lilly seeks to encourage members to explore their passions and strengths in agriculture. She is committed to helping FFA evolve by reducing barriers and ensuring every member experiences the full potential of agricultural education. Drawing from her own experiences, including working in animal science and Spanish immersion, Lilly hopes to empower students to find their place in FFA, just as she has found hers.
Lilly is one of 37 FFA members who have been chosen to compete for national office at the 97th National FFA Convention and Expo this week, marking a significant milestone in their leadership journeys and showcasing their commitment to FFA and agriculture.
The process to become a national officer is arduous, with the candidates – each state FFA association can submit one individual member annually – taking part in an extensive interview process with the National FFA Officer Nominating Committee. The committee is comprised of students who interview and select the national officers.
It takes a highly motivated person to become a successful National FFA Officer—an opportunity afforded to few members. Becoming a national officer requires members to learn about their passions and gain a better understanding of what life as a national officer is like. The life of a national officer is nonstop hard work and never-ending commitments, but it is a life-changing experience—one they will cherish forever.
