Our featured student for the #StudentSaturday of January is Micah Gordon! Micah is a senior at Bad Axe High School and has been an FFA member for five years.

When asked how his FFA journey started, Micah stated, “When our FFA chapter was reconstructed, my FFA teacher told me to come out while I was showing at our county fair. Before FFA, I was only in 4H, where I showed cattle during the summer months.” Since joining FFA, Micah has competed in various skills and leadership contests, including Soil Judging, Crop Identification, Agricultural Communications, Conducts of Meetings, and Job Interview. Micah’s favorite contest is Creed Speaking, and although he cannot compete in it anymore, Micah still enjoys helping younger members be successful with the Creed Speaking contest.

Micah has also received several awards and degrees as well, including the Discovery Degree, Greenhand Degree, Chapter Degree, Outstanding Junior, Chapter Star, and Chapter Scholar. As for service leadership, Micah is currently serving as his Chapter Vice President, and the Region III Vice President.

Outside of the classroom, Micah has two prominent supervised agricultural experiences. When asked about his SAE’s, Micah described them, “One of my SAE’s is livestock production where I purchase a young calf, occasionally have to bottle feed it, and raise it to show at our local fair. My other is poultry production where I raise sets of broiler birds to market to customers. This SAE started off as the broiler contest, but I soon found a niche for it and raised birds outside the contest. I made a little side business of it as well. My poultry production has also led to my family and I purchasing laying hens, which we use only for consumption.”

When asked what one piece of advice Micah had for new members, he stated, “Treat everyone with respect. Not only will you make someone’s day, but you’ll also build a strong reputation for yourself. Additionally, stepping out of your comfort zone will almost always lead to new experiences, new friends, and even new hobbies.”

Outside of FFA, Micah is involved in various different sports, including football, hockey, and baseball. Along with sports he is a member of his school’s NHS as well as being a member of Beef-N’-More 4H Club out of Ubly, Michigan.

Congratulations to Micah Gordon for being the #StudentSaturday highlight of the month for January!
